Exploring Mediterranean Spain: wine, cheese, markets, architecture

As some of you know, I leave on Tuesday, April 5 for a three-week holiday in Spain. I fly into Barcelona and then travel south along the coast via Tarragona to Alicante before doing a loop inland to Murcia and Jumilla, then returning back up the coast to Valencia and Barcelona.

This is southern Spain with traces of the early Roman and Moorish settlers. It’s the garden of Spain with rice paddies, oranges and vegetables galore. And it’s grape-growing country with lots and lots of wineries (bodegas).

Highlights
It’s shaping up to be a really interesting trip. Here are just a few highlights:

Alicante – Mireia of Mandarinablue Tours will be taking me to visit some wineries – I think it will be similar to this tour that she offered recently.

Mireia has also arranged for me to have a tour of Alicante with one of her colleagues and has given me a list of vegetarian restaurants and bakeries in Alicante.

Jumilla – Sue and John Walker give free walking tours in English of Jumilla, and they’ve been incredibly helpful. I’m looking forward to sharing a meal and exploring the town with them. This is a small town, but there are at least 7 wineries within the town limits plus an olive oil producer.

I’m also looking forward to a visit to Bodegas Luzon (Altos de Luzon blog post), which is just outside of Jumilla, and to tasting the local goat cheese.

Valencia – John Maher of Wines of Valencia has given me a list of stores and restaurants. He also put me in touch with the owner of La Ola Fresca, a delicafe, which seems to combine healthy food, store, cooking and language classes and activities, with a British twist - sounds fascinating.

Barcelona – Yvonne from Gourmand Breaks has given me a list of cheese, spices and chocolate stores in Barcelona.

I’m also looking forward to a guided tour of the Pares Balta winery (wines available from Cava Secreta and Souleio in Saskatoon), near Vilafranca del Penedes.

And there are food markets and bakeries and museums and Roman ampitheatres and much, much more to explore! Plus it’s Easter so there will be huge Semana Santa parades.

La Oreja de Van Gogh

Spelt and Millet: Ancient Grains for Today's Healthy Diet

When I was growing up, whole wheat flour and rice were exotic options. Now we have a whole range of intriguing choices – buckwheat, spelt, millet, kamut – the list goes on and on. My problem is that I don’t know very much about some of these grains, so I arranged a phone call with Nicole Davis, the Owner/Manager of Daybreak Mill near Estevan. Daybreak Mill grows and processes approximately 18 different kinds of flour, whole and de-hulled grains, flakes, cereals, and legumes. They are 100% organic. “We want people to have access to healthy, wholesome food,” Nicole explains. Beer: History, Trivia and War

Brew North by Ian Coutts is a fascinating look at the history of beer in Canada. I particularly enjoyed the archival photos and beer labels. Here are some tidbits from Canada’s brewing history:           In 2007, Canadians drank 71.67 litres per capita with the Yukon leading the way at 139.75 litres per person, followed by Alberta at 98.54      The first criminal trial and hanging in Upper Canada was held at Finkle’s Tavern, which opened near Bath, Ontario, in 1793.      Two skeletons at the bar were props for Charles McKiernan’s tall tales (told in rhyme) at Joe Beef’s Canteen in Montreal. Customers shared the bar with a variety of animals, including a succession of beer-drinking bears.      Empty beer bottles were originally stored in crates filled with straw, a favourite spot for mice to nest. Artisan Cheese-Making in Saskatchewan

Travel in Europe and you are immediately struck by the number and variety of local cheeses, but then you come home to Saskatchewan and there are next to no local artisan cheeses, but that situation is about to change. ( Salayview Farm south of Regina has just started making an excellent fresh goat cheese.) The Saskatchewan Food Industry Development Centre Inc. (Food Centre) held a two-day cheese-making workshop this past week, and it was filled to capacity with people who were eager to start making cheese as a hobby or to sell commercially. The course was led by Margaret Morris of Glengarry Cheesemaking and Erin Hiebert, the Food Centre’s Manager of Skills Development and Food Safety Programs, while Brev Chesky, the Centre’s Processing Director, assisted with the hands-on portion of the workshop.
