Pimatisiwin, Mar. 8-16
Gordon Tootoosis Nikaniwin Theatre’s youth program is putting on Pimatisiwin from Mar. 8-16. The play “follows members of the Kihew family, the food they eat and how that affects their physical, mental and spiritual lives.”

Saskatoon Beer Run, June 3
Saskatoon is participating in this year’s Canada Beer Run on June 3. Participants run in waves from brewery to brewery, stopping for 20 minutes for a sample. Costumes are encouraged. $5.00 from every registration will be donated to the local branch of the Canadian Mental Health Association.

Participating breweries include High Key Brewing Company, Shelter Brewing Company, 9 Mile Legacy Brewing, 21st Street Brewery, Crossmount Cider Company (at Cathedral Social Hall), and Prairie Sun Brewery.

City Perks Coffee
City Perks is now open 6:30 am to 10 pm, Monday to Friday; 8 am to 5 pm on weekends; and offers brunch on both Saturdays and Sundays from 8 am to 2 pm. They also cater sandwich trays, salads, soups, and desserts.

Vector Coffee Company
“As long as you have a plug-in, I can serve specialty coffees,” says Daryl Grunau, Vector Coffee Company. His portable coffee cart is a great addition to everything from an office coffee break to a wedding reception.

FoodRenew
FoodRenew is working with local businesses to ensure food isn’t thrown away. They made their first official food rescue this past week, delivering leftovers from Citizen Café & Bakery to the Saskatoon Friendship Inn.

One a Penny, Two a Penny . . .
. . . Hot Cross Buns! Tis the season. They’re available at both Earth Bound Bakery and The Night Oven. (Mother Goose rhyme)

Cheesecake Chef
Brady Fornwald started making cheesecake when he was 13. Nowadays, he makes 2 or 3 a day and hopes to set up a booth at the Saskatoon Farmers’ Market in the summer.

Sidewalk Cafés
Finding room for both pedestrians and sidewalk cafés can be challenging under Saskatoon regulations that require two metres for pedestrians. DeeAnn Mercier, Broadway Business Improvement District, is recommending a longer season for parking patios, which are currently only allowed from April 1 to October 31.

Apron Strings
Now that I’m home, I’m reading up a storm (thank you, Saskatoon Public Library!). Apron Strings by Jan Wong is the story of a journalist and her culinary son who stay with families in France, Italy, and China to learn homestyle cooking. The chapter about China was particularly interesting as the families were all very wealthy with maids – and it was the maids who demonstrated local specialties.

Flavourful Saskatoon is a weekly Monday feature. I also post articles about food that is good, clean and fair; travel; and books. You may also enjoy EcoFriendly Sask profiling Saskatchewan environmental initiatives and events.
